This volume compares two different ways of modernization between vastly different countries both undergoing rapid changes in the 19th century. To examine its subject, the book uses the methodology of drawing attention to specific topics in political and economic developments. Both countries had to undergo essential changes while being economically marginal and hugely depending on political and economically dominant nations (Argentine in the case of Paraguay, Great Britain in the case of Egypt). Both countries tried to create a limited scale independent national economic policy as a basis for nation building. Both were at least in part successful, even if the Triple Alliance War in Paraguay and British intervention in Egypt aborted any further developments.
